No Boston Legal indeed

How do I put this without confusing people.

The topic in the Putik Lada column coincided with the conversation I had with NZi lastnight.

More gen-Y (after 1978 born) lawyers are leaving the private practice mainly because of obvious reasons: better offer, better pay, better perks and benefit.

'Green' lawyers, as how the senior lawyers put it, are the one fresh from chambering, are also the ones who would disappear quickest into the comfortable in-houses, teaching and gomen agencies.

Hence..Pre-matured retirement.
While leaving only a handful of the greens, by the time we're not so green, we're all bruised and battered.

Nzi and I were talking about a dear friend of ours who opted out from the Private practice to teach (and doing very well indeed) . She was telling me that the majority opinion putting a benchmark "that even her pun quit practice" because apparently that friend of ours is a high-flyer passionate litigator.

But I only have respect for her, because I think she have got the guts to leave the stereotyping agenda. Most of the people are too scared to venture the unfamiliar path. That includes me.

As we got deeper in the conversation, we somehow realise that if we were to leave the Private Practice at all, it wouldn't be because of the obvious reasons stated above (better pay bla bla bla).

(Apparently now the market is catching up with the demand and (haha) lesser supply of budding lawyers. Most of the ones in my batch are getting more than 3K even after deduction. Apparently if we're talking about pension schemes, the gomen is the most appealing but flexibility in the Private Practice wins hands down. )

The not-so obvious reason would be if threading the familiar path would warrant us vacant, empty lives. This would be The Reason.

We shared some of our almost "becoming vacant" experience:
NZi, a corporate LA was telling me sometimes she found it pointless in delving so much into the corporate world, or so to say I am becoming numb of winning and losing everyday as a Litigator that eventually it does not matter.

And the society's a big help too.
The corporate legal counsel (where the big money is) would always be deemed as the "Shark" and the Litigator would always be pointed out aptly as the "Manipulative Liars".(Though the last (at least) both of us checked, we have only been doing Honest Works)

At the end of the day, all the unmotivated hardwork is called off like a crap to the society which would eventually seeps in our perspective and esteem and this hurts the most.

Why do we let out-side factor affects us is the no-bonus question.
When the work catches up, and the gloss would wear off eventually we don't realise somehow that through the pain, we only have learnt to be better, faster and sharper.
It is ourselves that we need to have faith in.

No pain, no gain they say.
Pain was and still is never glamourous.
The only glam lawyers I know is only in Boston Legal and lucky me I never watched it before.

but I still would go "huiyo she's a lawyer" whenever u come around.

There there. Don't be sad.
In my line of work pun, I might be seen as the glamourous one manning the whole show oh-so effectively but believe me the only glamourisng effect is from the lipstick I wear.

Oouuu revlon.

haha, there's nothing glamorous about being a lawyer. going to court, wasting 75% of our time waiting for our matter to be postponed to another date because apparently courts are too bogged down with cases, getting frequently asked by clients why on earth does it take so long for their matters to heard in Court..etc...and see, i find myself constantly nagging like an old lady!:P

glamer bile tarik beg pilot n pakai robe tu je hahaha.

the five minutes of fame.

amicus curiae 15 August 2008 at 13:06:00 GMT+8

I concur with my brethren. heh.

fe: hmm I gave up wearing lipstick and makeups to court. Ppl would still see gloom anyway so why try harder than a sincere smile.

fad: Oh well not glamourous, but there's always drama. That makes us unglamourous Drama queens Hmm (unrelated) I want to ask Puan Hendon, I wonder how she can still survive...

kak aida:
yelah tu. Bila beg pilot terlanggar kaki abang polis pastu kain robe tu tersentap kat pintu lift..five minutes of fame jadi five months of laughing stock.

gambar zaman kanak-kanak tu, still fresh and young (baru 2 tahun je tapi dah rasa cam tua sangat).

that's why aku suka pergi menepek kat uia, seronok tgk kanak-kanak living the happiest part of their life, sangat bersemangat nak jadi lawyer, in-house, legal officer, whatever... lepas 2 tahun...worn out already...sigh...cemana nak survive sampai tahun ke-7??? tell me...

p/s:
jom lepak dgn the corporate lawyer and the high-flyer-passionate-litigator-turn-into-lecturer tu...

Anonymous,  16 August 2008 at 02:05:00 GMT+8

doesnt matter if being a lawyer ni sbnrnye x glemer. whats important is other ppl think its glamorous :D sometimes its not just 'glamor' in the sense that u pakai robe go to court how u speak blablabla. sometimes ppl think.."wah..all the law in her head! susah nk tipu minah ni..". ppl look up to u. tu glamour lah kan hehe.

as for tukar2 jobs, maybe some ppl just wanna do something tht they like. n u'll never know what u like until u try doing it. what do i like? i wanna stay at home, i dont wanna work, thats why im stuck here studying...coz i guess its the next best thing..hee..so pemalas.

amicus curiae 16 August 2008 at 12:09:00 GMT+8

ayu:

haha is it thaaaat obvious ke?tulah lama tak lepak since the last makan2.
When I think about it,I used to detest the idea of studying for the purpose of exam,(i think I still am kot) but all this practicing life (albeit the informal edu kot?) is draining the academic from me and I need the "formal education" to kick the passion in me.Or is it just an excuse,I can never tell.

areej:
haha what u said is true, but behind it all its all hardwork, glamour rarely takes place. The real thing is when we do the right thing right, and ppl start to acknowledge your work.

bestnye if I can do the same,areej..but boleh tak minus the exam panic (mmg aa aku tak ske)..afterall,learning is always a life long process kan..insyaAllah one day,I'll follow what ur doing now (maybe lambat dan lembab sket aa)hehee.

adina 16 August 2008 at 13:40:00 GMT+8

After week 2 of chambering, we (kawan2 seangkatan ku at this place which shall not be mentioned) started humming

"Where is the passion when you need it the most? You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost..."

The blessed young ones became old and tired souls filled with voids.

Girl Behind A Shadow 17 August 2008 at 15:47:00 GMT+8

Entahla, walaupun baru nak masuk 2 years but we feel like so worn out kan Af?

But as soon as I realized that there are so many things yet to learn, tetibe rase semangat balik. Aritu Sha baru ajar aku what are pleadings, and other civil procedures yg I was not aware of. Aku first trial pun blm buat lg. Time kat UIA dlu main hafal jer, bkn phm pun or tau nk apply. Haha, malu jer. Skang barula tau apa tu pleadings n such. And how to draft Notis Kehadiran? **wink2**

Nzi tu pun br start.Sian die sbb corporate mmg berat. At least kita dpt lepak gak kt cts after matter gn NW and kutuk judge..oops.

tp yg litigator turned to lecturer to mmg happy. Kita sabar jer la. this is the path that we chose.

Zackyun 17 August 2008 at 19:27:00 GMT+8

haha hida..u imagine how amazed i am to those having 20 years under their belt and still happily without guilt admit hey I dont know that much still, its how you make it everyday without failing yourselves is what matters most.

me? im waiting for my maturity period.hehehehe

amicus curiae 17 August 2008 at 19:32:00 GMT+8

ooopps that was me. buat ape aku nyamar jadi doctor (yah lupe nak logout) :P being a legal counsel is already too demanding, what more of a medical doctor.hehe.

oh to add up,i think it necessary to have passion in whatever we do.regardless how taxing it is (that'll warrant us a right to complain) nonetheless.

adina 17 August 2008 at 21:56:00 GMT+8

Aku nak lepak kat court jugak!!

Ni bangun dari kerusi pun boleh kira ngan jari kaki.

Girl Behind A Shadow 18 August 2008 at 10:20:00 GMT+8

Yups Af, at least kita still a teeny weeny bit of passion to last us Only God knows how long in this profession.

Like my lil sister yg amik medic, abis cuti je mrungut kena hit the books. tu blm lg kena oncall 3x a week.

amicus curiae 18 August 2008 at 11:36:00 GMT+8
