cheat

I'd just finished reading Iris Murdoch's A Fairly Honourable Defeat.
Not without a dizzying perspective of satanical engulfment and Julius King is Lucifer, the beautiful and gifted playmaker for honest persons to cheat about themselves.

How easy it is to deceive and be deceived!

Have always had a thing for Irish authors.
Iain Banks and Iris Murdoch. Two favourites and they're Irish.

And while reading Bank's Walking on Glass, I read and think about the damning final chapter with Stereophonics' Drowning in the background (in my head and on the stereo alternatively).

Mornings I can't breathe
Wave crashes over me
And drowns me
Wind's running rings around me
It takes me time to see
What is real?
-Drowning by Stereophonics
I annoyingly caused the passengers of my car to dread listening repetitiously to it while I was still haunted by the characters of the book, and I must apologise. Good thing its good music.

And to Murdoch's classical attempt to define the philosophical realism, social intimacies and the morals of having none, I'm reminded to Damien Rice's 9 Crimes.

Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be cheating on you
It's the wrong time
She's pulling me through
It's a small crime
And I've got no excuse
-9 crimes by D. Rice

Must I always have this accompanying music to help me feel the characters in books I read?
I can't help it.
Books are the literary spirit and lyrics are the haunting factor.
I cannot help but not to separate them two.
If I did, its like being Julius King.

dear my pets;

fara: bad boys have the edge only to some point. It'll end somehow and I don't think they'll be so pretty afterall. I believe in definite times for structured beings, and for spirits, infinity. :)

wani: i rest any argument to literature scholar like you...hehehe..

what about the mccourt? his irish and melancholic, too!

amicus curiae 14 July 2008 at 16:13:00 GMT+8

you know i really don't appreciate anonymous commentators, but mccourt (u mean of angela's ashes and 'tis)? if we're talking about the same author, his style is very distinctive, and it moved me.fyi also, the two books were a gift from a good friend of mine (fara emir) and when i asked her why this two books, she asked me back, what did you gather from reading them and i said 'poverty' and she said yes and be grateful.

Ah,I like McCourt's books too. IMO, Angela's Ashes is better than the rest la. The books are so depressing, suits me just well.

Af, read Gabriel Marquez and Michael Oondatje?

Oh, I like Nick Hornby too. Terpesong sedikit dari yang normal. But he's funny.

amicus curiae 16 July 2008 at 10:42:00 GMT+8

You mean michael ondaatje of english patient? sudaaa =D nasib baik then mr fiennes yg berlakon in that movie..hehe

gabriel's cholera is,as u know,a must read..its really good,i wish i can read it in the original language tho.

nick hornby..haha i tak favour sgt kot funny2 warm stories..

amicus curiae 16 July 2008 at 10:44:00 GMT+8

ooops fara,almost left you out..didn't realise u left a comment..u are my english guru whhaaat.haha i did,miserably tho,attempted to potray frank's style.hahaha.

adina 16 July 2008 at 13:39:00 GMT+8

yeah, oondatje english patient. his other books pun ok jugak. i like fiennes brothers too ;-)

yeah, cholera is really good. don't u just wish u know all of the languages there are in the world so that u can read anything without any hindrance. i wish i knew german so i can read mein kampf in its original language. i wish i knew persian so i can read rumi in its original, i wish i knew arabic (salah sendiri tak gi kelas. haha) etc etc...

adina 16 July 2008 at 13:41:00 GMT+8

oh, hornby is not funny funny warm. he's just FUNNY. witty, i wud say - as almost all english are. he doesn't make cheesy love novels.

Watched or read About A Boy (yes, hugh grant)? That's his book.

aku pun tak gemar sgt funny2 warm but this one is good.

amicus curiae 16 July 2008 at 14:27:00 GMT+8

reason why i skipped the movie: hugh grant.but the book i read masa matrix(it was borrowed from nadira),not much i can't remember of it..its just the the way brits potray themselves, they're funny, while im more inclined towards the brooding type of writers..like graham greene.(an englishmen btw)anyway,if the serious subjects of life interest you..hornby's long way down is not too bad, still funny,in fact i remember re-reading for pleasure compared to hugh grant infested novel.i tak faham kenapa laaa liz hurley took so long to ditch the joker.

adina 16 July 2008 at 15:07:00 GMT+8

OMG OMG!!!

I'm like the biggest Hugh Grant groupie (alongside cik Melati). Hehehe...I think he's so blardee funny. Been following him since the "the man who went up a hill and came down a mountain" days. I tak paham why HE wanted Liz Hurley. Haha.

tell me about brooding type, Af. I'm more inclined towards the gloomy bleak dark side of life as well. That's why my favourite movies, my favourite books, my favourite music - depressing ones. Graham Greene is fine too.

Nick Hornby je exception. I have all his books.

Oh, ultimate favourite writer - Muhammad Asad. The one who, if I had a chance ever, I'd be more than thrilled to meet. But that's another story altogether :-)

amicus curiae 16 July 2008 at 15:31:00 GMT+8

Muhammad Asad. The only man I know Melati loves so much. Crossroads and Mecca. Setiap orang islam perlu membaca buku2nya untuk mengetahui mengapa asad, seorang jew, mempertahankan Islam.Nadia, are u listing all your collections, seriously?

adina 16 July 2008 at 16:33:00 GMT+8

Mengapa Asad pernah berkata bahawa - "Until I, a non Muslim, talked to the Muslims as if I were to defend Islam from their own negligence"...

Listing down my collections? Hehe...NOOOO.

If I were to list down, tak muat kat sini. But I believe u read way more than I do. I'm just asking opinions around cos kengkawan aku (read: far, fad, asma, etc) hang out with slalu don't really read. So this is like a rare opportunity :-)

amicus curiae 16 July 2008 at 16:42:00 GMT+8

hmm thats why he is re-named with "asad".

ha tulah, asek berjumpe di alam maya sahaja...kesian kite kena borak kat comment box..
